Hello, my name is Allyson, and I write under the name of Allyson R. Abbott. The R is for Rose (after my mother) and Abbott is my maiden name. I come from Northampton, in the Midlands, UK, but I travel a lot and living in Spain at the moment.
Itโs because of our travelling (our, as in my husband and I), that I actually became an author. We were on a long road trip around the USA in a Motorhome, and I found I had a lot of spare time on my hands. Reading was a hobby and had been thinking about writing ever since I discovered that Kindle allowed anyone to publish a book.
My husband was all for it, thinking it would earn us some extra travelling funds, so we naively set out with me writing and marketing and my husband formatting and publishing.
It has now taken over our lives. We had no idea what was involved to sell books. And of course, the more you write the bigger the workload. I think my husband regrets his enthusiasm, as he very often reminds me that he has retired once!
What are you currently working on?
I have two projects on the go, with a lot more building up in my head. Project 1 is the follow up book to Slaving Over Christmas. This book is Slaving Over Valentineโs. This series is a little โspicierโ than my normal books, but it still has the humour you find in all my stories. It is about a married couple (of twenty years) discovering that a little BSDM has worked wonders in their bedroom. But this is more shades of pink than shades of grey as Jill is a FemDom and Tom becomes the slave.

The other project is a nonfiction book. I have had great success with How to Write a Simple Book Review; itโs easier than you think! And funnily enough I enjoyed the discipline in writing a nonfiction. It reminded me of college days, when strict research and referencing is required. Now I am writing a book that will hopefully help new or aspiring authors on the road to their dreams. No title as yet, the working title is The Glossary, but that is way too vague. I might even do a competition to find the best title.
How do your stories & characters develop?
They develop as I write. I use my husband as a sounding board and very often he asks me what is going to happen, or whatโs the ending? I have no idea. I make it up as I go along. I put myself in the situation of the character and work out what will happen or what they may say. On the hoof, as they say.
How do you go about creating the most โSwoonworthyโ character?
I donโt. I avoid those sorts of characters mainly. I like funny, witty, rugged, but mostly real life people. In my opinion people only tend to swoon at half naked male models. I try to create real people, with real problems and real life issues. People we can all relate to, but then again, I do tend to write for a mature audience. Not sure YAs would appreciate my books!
What are you currently reading? Are you enjoying it? What format is it in (ebook, hardback or paperback) and who is the author?
Having just written a Christmas story I am now getting through a lot of reading of Christmas books. I have never read them before and they are quite sweet, most of them are well written, short stories and I can get through one a night. Good job I have a kindle when travelling!
